semi-feral cat living in my home... what to do if anything?
on nov 13th, my cat nibs disappeared. we live in a small town and some local people saw a cat matching his appearance was hanging out at the marina. i got a trap and caught a semi-feral cat. i.e he let me pet him but was frozen stiff and scared. a visitor let him escape the night i caught him and he darted under my indoor stairs in my living room. he has been living under my stairs for about a month. he has no interest in my boyfriend and i. he sneaks out at night (i hear him). he mostly uses the litter box i put under there for him. he has food and a warm place to stay (it is cold here in NH). should i call animal control or just keep him for now and let him live here until the spring and then let him go outside? i don't know what to do. help! i feel like animal control would put him to sleep. would he be better off? thanks for any serious input.
I ran into a semi-feral cat at my old apartment and ended up loving him. By the end of 2 years he sat in my lap and nuzzled up to me. I would never have called animal control because, yes, they will put him to sleep and no one is going to adopt him probably since he is semi-feral. You are doing the right thing by providing him a place to sleep, etc. where it's warm. Just let him stay until spring, it would ABSOLUTELY not be better if he were put to sleep--he has a life, too, just like you. If you don't want him inside get him a dog house from Wal-Mart or something and put it outside with blankets and/or cat bed. At night you could get those Therma-Care heatwraps and stick them under his blankets to keep him warm (that's what I did for the semi-feral I knew). I still keep in touch with my semi-feral everytime I go back to visit and he honestly changed my life for the better. Good luck!
